Individuals with Down syndrome have historically been marginalized, dehumanized, and institutionalized. For 26 years, S.M.I.L.E. on Down Syndrome has worked hard to change that narrative. Our organization serves the Down syndrome community across 10 counties in Southwestern Indiana, as well as families in Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Illinois. Every year, our organization:

• Has over 6,000 encounters with individuals with Down syndrome and their families
• Provides $500 for each individual with Down syndrome for expenses not covered by insurance
• Provides mentorship for parents and families of individuals with Down syndrome
• Serves as a first point of contact for families seeking support
• Conducts weekly, monthly, and seasonal programming to support continued growth and community involvement
• Hosts 4 or more annual events to raise awareness for Down syndrome and build community ties
• Conducts medical outreach to advocate for individuals with Down syndrome
• Gathers and distributes information regarding research opportunities
• Provides adoption assistance for families interested in adopting an individual with Down syndrome
• Advocates for individuals with Down syndrome in political and educational arenas
• Attends community events as an organization to raise awareness and share information
